Famous for the Angkor Temple Complex, Cambodia is well established on Southeast Asia’s backpacking circuit. It’s also a great destination for those choosing to travelling alone. So if you’re looking for your next solo adventure or struggling to find a travel companion, we’ve put together these great reasons to travel solo in Cambodia.
It’s pretty safe
Provided you follow your common sense, Cambodia is generally a safe country to travel to. And whether you’re travelling solo or not, it’s always best to keep your wits about you.
The biggest issues you can expect to encounter are petty crimes such as bag snatching. So keep your valuables close by or in your hotel and avoid walking alone at night. Thanks to Cambodia’s high Buddhist population, sexual harassment is also a low concern for solo female travellers.
It’s super cheap
As with the rest of Southeast Asia, Cambodia is well known for being easy on the budget. Dorm rooms in hostels start at around $4 USD per night – perfect for meeting other travellers. And you’ll find private rooms in guesthouses or hostels for between $5-10 USD per night.
Food is even cheaper, with a restaurant meal costing between $3-5 USD and street food even less. Local city transportation will also only set you back a few dollars. So if you’re worried that solo travel is more expensive – that certainly isn’t the case in Cambodia.
The locals are very friendly
One of the reasons so many travellers fall in love with Cambodia is the warm hospitality of the locals. Cambodians are well known for their friendly nature and big smiles. And after the trauma inflicted by the Khmer Rouge, they’re also incredibly proud of their country’s recovery.
They’re keen to show the rest of the world what Cambodia has to offer and you’ll find many Cambodians happy to help you on your travels. So while travelling solo in Cambodia, be sure not only to make friends with other travellers, but to take the time to meet the locals too.
You definitely won’t get bored
If you thought Cambodia’s only attractions were its temples – it’s time to think again. Whilst this country may have three main hubs, there’s much more to discover. Tonle Sap is the largest lake in Southeast Asia and is famous for its floating villages. Battambang boasts some of Cambodia’s best-preserved French colonial architecture. And Kratie offers the chance to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins of the Mekong River. Coastal Kep is also the perfect place to slow down for a while, with stunning sunsets and mouth-watering seafood. So no matter what type of solo traveller you are, you won’t get bored in Cambodia.
