Tanzania Safari Parks and Wildlife

The status of Tanzania safari parks as a primary destination for wildlife explorers has been reflected in the expeditions of The National Geographic, The Discovery Channel and Animal Planet. Indeed, Northern Tanzania parks are fantastic - Serengeti offers unique lion safaris and The Great Migration, Tarangire is famous for its fascinating elephant safaris, and Ngorongoro enjoys the reputation of a place with the highest density of wild animals in the world. Lake Manyara, with its flocks of pink flamingos and Mahali and Gombe parks with the largest population of chimpanzees are also must-see destinations for any avid traveller. Undoubtedly, Tanzania is the best place for completing a full African wildlife safari.

SERENGUETI -TANZANIA

Serengeti National Park, in northern Tanzania, is known for its massive annual migration of wildebeest and zebra. Seeking new pasture, the herds move north from their breeding grounds in the grassy southern plains. Many cross the marshy western corridor’s crocodile-infested Grumeti River.

MAASAI MARA - TANZANIA

Maasai Mara National Reserve is an area of preserved savannah wilderness in southwestern Kenya, along the Tanzanian border. Its animals include lions, cheetahs, elephants, zebras and hippos. Wildebeest traverse its plains during their annual migration. The landscape has grassy plains and rolling hills, and is crossed by the Mara and Talek rivers.

Tarangire National Park

We will pick you up from your hotel at Arusha at 8am and take you to a very special national park. Tarangire is famous for its diverse landscape with nine different vegetation zones. The park is particularly known for the abundance of Ancient Baobab trees (the largest trees in the continent) which fill the landscape and dwarf the animals next to them. The river of the park is full of wildlife ranging from a large variety of birds to lions, leopards, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes and, of course, elephants. In fact, the park has the largest concentration of elephants in the whole country and provides unique chances to observe the interaction between elephant families. The lunch area is fascinating, boasting an observatory with amazing views to the river and wildlife (with good chances of seeing a hunt while having your picnic). In the afternoon we will still do a game drive before returning to Arusha (around 5pm to 6pm is the return time).

Serengeti-National-Park

With its 4 million wild animals that include 364 species of mammals, Tanzania has the largest concentration of animals per square kilometer in the world! Plus it boasts 1108 species of birds, 130 amphibian, and over 275 reptile species. Here are some fascinating facts about a few of the animals you will encounter on your Tanzanian safari…

Zanzibar- Tanzania

Zanzibar is a small island – approximately 20km at its widest point and 80 km long – so a short drive from Stone Town in any direction brings you to an exquisite tropical beach, replete with its own resort. Zanzibar boasts a plethora of beach accommodations – each one different – to meet your particular travel style. One can find secluded five star resorts (some of which are located on small private islands off of the main island); funky laid-back bungalows; hotels for the active beachgoer with snorkeling, diving, deep sea fishing, kiteboarding, kayaking, and more; romantic getaways designed for couples and honeymooners; or family-oriented spots.

Serengeti Mountain - Tanzania

At 5,895 m, it is the highest mountain in Africa and the largest free-standing volcanic massif in the world – Mt Kilimanjaro. This huge mountain cone stands majestically above the wide plains and offers picturesque views of the endless savannah all the way to Kenya. I will share the pros and cons of the four ways to the summit and their special features. Today: the Marangu and Rongai routes.

The different routes to the top lead over grassland into the species-rich forests inhabited by Colobus monkeys, up into a heather and moor landscape to reach the alpine and glacier zone. The top of the massif, the Roof of Africa, is not only accessible to experienced mountain climbers. Even people like me, who actually only associate ‘steep passes’ with football, have the best chance of “just” climbing the summit with a certain level of athletic fitness. And let me tell you: I thank myself that I did that.

Chimpanzee in Tanzania

Western Tanzania is for the serious safari enthusiast, travellers who want to experience the rough, remote frontier land of the Africa of old. Vast trackless expanses, minimal infrastructure and few visitors mean this region is still much like it was when when Stanley found Livingstone here in the 1870s. You’ll find a true sense of adventure here that is often missing in other more popular parts of the country.

Western Tanzania encompasses Katavi National Park and Mahale Mountains National Park, both part of the ‘road less travelled’ in safari circles. Wild Katavi is home to the famous denning crocodile and predators galore as well as hippo pods numbering in the thousands. Mahale is all verdant forests and angular mountain slopes which drop vertically down to the shores of mystical Lake Tanganyika. It is one of the best places in the world to see chimpanzees in their natural habitat.

Southern Tanzania Safari

Southern Tanzania is still relatively unknown on the safari circuit, yet it offers some of the very best safari country and game viewing on the African continent. The Selous Reserve and Ruaha National Park are large and fairly wild – perfect if you don’t want the many other safari vehicles that you’re likely to see in the more popular north. Here, you can expect remote, private and game rich areas that are a photographer’s dream. In true modern-day safari tradition, you will finish with a few days along the coast, Tanzanian-style. Lapping up the sun at a beach lodge is the ideal end to this African adventure.
